Voices of the Lawn – Helen feature image

We’re back with another installation of “Voices of the lawn”.

Meet Helen. Helen first volunteered in August of 2018. If you know the history of the Levitt Pavilion in Dayton, you know that was the when it opened! In fact, Helen volunteered at the beverage tent at the very first weekend of free concerts. We sat down with her last week for an interview, so you could get to know this incredible woman.

What does community mean to you?

Well, I think community is friendship, community is brotherhood

To me, community is diversity…I’ve lived here most of my life, and I want Dayton as a community to succeed. I think there’s things we need to improve, and I think this venue is a great way to start. People can see that diversity is not ugly, but great.

Why did you first decide to volunteer at the Levitt Pavilion Dayton?

Kind of the simple answer is “why not?” You know, it was a way to give back. ‘Cause I believe in giving back and helping people.

And what brought you back? What keeps bringing you back to volunteer?

Why not?
Why not?  Why not? I’m an old lady. Why not do some things with my time, you know? It’s like I get to pick and choose by volunteering. It’s not a job that I have to come. I don’t have to be there. So, I choose to be there.

And when you aren’t here, what are you doing? Who’s Helen?

Well, I’m not bored. I try to exercise in senior aerobics four mornings a week. I volunteer a lot for my synagogue.
I volunteer for Jewish Federation for the Holocaust Memorial Service every year. I just signed up and started volunteering at the Wright Patterson Museum, helping as a docent for the Holocaust Hall, but I’m also there to help in ADA mobility. I’m like, I don’t know anything about planes, but I can certainly help people get wheelchairs and scooters. So, I help there, when I can. I do things that keep me busy. A lot of it is giving back. I have time, I don’t have money but I have energy, so why not?
