Embracing genres that have not historically fostered women artists outside of the role of singer, OKAN co-leaders have faced many challenges. Magdelys talks about the obstacles she faced in pursuing percussion in her native Cuba and how "coming out as a percussionist" to her family. was as big a deal as coming out as queer. Part of the next wave of Cuban women composers and multi-instrumentalists, Elizabeth and Magdelys bring a fresh perspective to Latin and world jazz fusion through their powerful harmonies, elevated musicianship and provocative but playful lyrical content.
Born in Havana, Cuba, Elizabeth Rodriguez is a classically trained violinist who served as concertmaster for Havana's Youth Orchestra. Magdelys Savigne hails from Santiago de Cuba and graduated with honors in orchestral percussion from Havana's University of the Arts.
Called "lush and vibrant, urgent but specific and deeply intentional" by CBC Music, OKAN's second album Espiral delved deeper into the group's rich Cuban roots, finding renewed inspiration in this powerful musical heritage. The Santeria influences aremost evident in the title track, which uniquely blends guajira, the folk genre of Eastern Cuba, with Santeria-derived chants.
A new album, Okantomi, to be released in the fall of 2023, includes special guests as classical violinist Lara St. John, leading figures in Cuban jazz, Dayme Arocena and Elmer Ferrer as well as the legendary Afro-Cuban percussionist Amado Dedeu.
Official showcases at SXSW, Folk Alliance International, Mundial Montreal, Contact East, Folk Music Ontario, Pacific Contact, Ontario Contact and Global Toronto have led to invitations to perform across Canada and the U.S. with stops at The Kortright Centre (Vancouver), The Grand (Calgary), Hermann's (Victoria), Passim (Boston), Old Town School of Folk (Chicago), Cal Performances (Berkely), as well at the Blue Skies, Mariposa, Toronto Jazz, Exit Next, Nuit D'Afrique, Harrison and Middlebury festivals, to name just a few.

From the vibrant, growing Hispanic population of Dayton, the interest of Daytonians in Latin-American culture, and a love of music that brings people together, the Dayton Salsa Project (DSP) was born. Founded in August 2018 by local musicians, half Dayton-born with the rest hailing from Puerto Rico, Colombia, and Peru.
The mission of the Dayton Salsa Project is to use music as the means to break barriers and promote inclusion by showcasing how musicians from diverse traditions and cultural backgrounds can get together in one accord. We aim to become ambassadors of Dayton’s diverse community, modeling the values of cultural diversity and inclusion, and sharing the rich history of Salsa at local, state, and national cultural events.
Many of us played in other bands that would perform in neighboring large cities like Columbus and Cincinnati only to meet people from Dayton who traveled in search of Salsa music and dancing. It only made sense to make Dayton our official band hometown where we can celebrate the diversity and musicality of Salsa by performing popular classics from the 1970’s and 80’s, the golden era.

Bio in English: With swooping hooks and party grooves the cumbia-grounded sound of this identity-inclusive LGBTQIA+ band buoyantly challenges societal norms, celebrates difference, and reclaims the love song for all. Building belonging in La Plata, the university town outside Buenos Aires, and home to Argentina’s hot indie scene, the exuberant Cachitas Now! first came together in 2011. The seven members hail from all over Argentina, and a diversity of personal experiences, backgrounds, and musical tastes brings an authenticity to their unique party of sound that stretches from traditional Argentine cumbia, tango, and folk idioms to urban rhythms like trap and reggaeton. Their lyrics call out social issues, push for women’s empowerment, and reject sexual and gender stereotypes to tell everyday stories in a context of freedom and a search for healthy relationships. Their message is based on radical inclusion -- the certainty that there are multiple ways of connecting, that romantic love is for all, and that the hetero norm has to be overthrown along with the macho approach. And they do it all with the joy of a crowded dance floor. Cachitas Now! compone sus propios temas. About the venue:

The work of the Community Overdose Action Team seeks to reduce the number of people dying from drug overdoses and drug abuse. The Community Overdose Action Team was established in the fall of 2016 to address the opioid/heroin epidemic in Montgomery County. Montgomery County Alcohol, Drug Addiction & Mental Health Services, Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County, and Montgomery County Administration are the lead agencies in the effort to combat the epidemic. International Overdose Awareness Day was initiated in 2001 by Sally J Finn at The Salvation Army in St Kilda, Melbourne, Australia. Since 2001, many community members as well as government and non-government organizations have held events to raise awareness and commemorate those who have been lost to drug overdose. This presented Public Health and the COAT team an opportunity to bring area agencies together to organize a collaborative effort to recognize this day in 2023. The goals is to bring community members together to recognize those that have been lost to the drug epidemic by an accidental overdose death, but to also recognize those that have survived overdoses and are working toward recovery.

Opening as part of the Projects Unlimited Gem Series - Heather Redman & the Reputation
Heather Redman and The Reputation blend elements of garage, rock & roll, and soul together with the grit of their Dayton, Ohio home to form a sound that is both fresh and familiar all at the same time. Having spent time in rock and roll outfits Neo American Pioneers and Late Night Drivers, Redman is no stranger to the Dayton music scene. For her first solo outing, Heather's powerhouse vocals are paired with the fuzzed-out guitars of Matt Webster (C. Wright's Parlour Tricks, The Professors), classic keyboard sounds provided by David Payne (The New Old-Fashioned), and the groove of the rhythm section driven by Dan Stahl and Bryan Lakatos (Shrug, Human Cannonball), to create a garage rock dance party you won't soon forget.NOTE THAT THE RULES ARE DIFFERENT FROM REGULAR LEVITT CONCERTS:
